“Thriving Like A Weed”

“This is the story of
how she thrived.”

This book is perhaps the most warm-hearted custom project I've worked on to-date. My dear friend wanted to have a journal made for his sister who had experienced a significant medical crisis and expressed her desire to write about her recovery. My friend wanted the journal to look as much like a real book as possible, and wrote a foreword for me to design and bind in to the front of the book.

One effect his sister’s medical crisis caused was worsening her eyesight, so the foreword is designed specifically with ease of legibility in mind—typeface, point size, leading were all selected and adjusted until it flowed well but the letters and words were easily identifiable. I also included a drawing of a dandelion on the title page and a dandelion seed-page break as a nod to the foreword’s theme of perseverance.

The final book features a 5oz leather cover embossed with the title, a full foreword designed for visual impairment and printed on soft cardstock, and 240 hand-bound pages of dot grid vellum ideal for writing large.
